Wakefield is the home of sculpture. The Hepworth Wakefield sits right on the river, holding one of the best collections of modern British sculpture outside London, and Yorkshire Sculpture Park, just outside the city, puts major sculpture out into open parkland.
Wakefield itself is a historic market city, with a cathedral at its centre and roots going back centuries. Sandal Castle and Pontefract Castle both sit within the district, highlighting Wakefield's long history alongside its modern art scene.
The National Coal Mining Museum for England, on the edge of the district, takes visitors 140 metres underground on a real pit tour, free to enter.
A district that moves easily between centuries, medieval castles, industrial mining heritage, and some of the best contemporary art in the country.
